Char began sewing while in high school. She became a real seamstress after marriage and the arrival of her first child Tim in 1965. Jack and Char lived on a rather meager salary of a US Air First 1st Lieutenant in Los Angeles where Tim was born. Then came Vicki and Char was busy sewing clothing as well as caring for the two children. They then moved to the USAF Academy in Colorado Springs where Mark was born. The children always had special and beautiful clothing for holidays such as Easter and Christmas….created by Char. On return to the Twin Cities and the subsequent arrival of Lori, Joe and Amy, Char was REALLY busy sewing clothing for play and special events.
In about 2000 and after the children were grown and left home, Char set out on her quilting hobby which has kept her busy ever since. Char and Jack’s home in Mendota Heights provides Char with a large sewing room and plenty of space to store her quilt inventory. Her sewing room has two sewing machines, a large quilting table and a closet full of fabrics. Her hobby relies on several trips a week to her fabric store haunts. Char discovered Missouri Star Quilt Company on a tour of the Missouri Highway 36 Quilt Trail in the summer of 2019. She has been an ardent fan of owner Jenny Doan and Jenny’s amazingly well done tutorials every since.
As you will see, Char has created a wide variety of quilts since 2000. She started having Jack hold her quilts for photos since 2004 so she has photos of over 550 quilts! Char’s talents in mathematics and geometry come in handy in laying out patterns. She has created international, sports related, holiday, Minnesota (using Minnesota Quilting Shop Hop yearly fabrics), novelty, patriotic and flowered quilts. Her geometric skills have yielded many symmetric and geometric designs. She also uses all her scraps to produce a category she calls “scrappy”.
